Summer Time...

What happens when you are waiting on a hot day for the ferry and you walk with your sister to get ice cream... Then you decide to be nice and bring some back for your parents?

It doesn't go well...
(and it didn't..)

Poor Sparky didn't think this one through...

I love this sweet (sticky) girl...

Mixing Fire & Weirdos...

Friday, July 30, 2010

....is rarely a good idea.

We got lucky...

We were at Lowes the other day and saw these little fire pits on sale...
We've talked about buying one for a few years now, but there were always more pressing things for our funds. Plus, I didn't want to spend money on something we'd use once or twice and then would be more yard clutter... Alas, the little ones were under $60 so I relented to family pressure and we bought one.

Well, Sparky and the Axeman were so excited they set it up right away...

She even whittled points onto "marshmallow roasting" sticks...

And they were right it was a lot of fun... We sat out side all evening...

We talked... We laughed... We made s'mores...
We exploded confetti poppers...
(It's not quite clear why we did the last one... That must be the weirdo part...)

We didn't want to go inside...

Unfortunately it started to "smell like rain" so we cleaned up a little and made it in just before the storm hit...

Good news, most the confetti dissolved in the rain...
Bad news, so did the half a box of graham crackers I forgot...
Whoops...

We can't wait to use it again...

Thanks for listening,

We registered Sparky in public school yesterday...

She is excited...

I'm sure we have nothing to worry about...

Getting To Know You...

Monday, July 26, 2010

My bloggy friend Jackie for My Perfect Little World does this meme each week... his week I decided I wanna play...

It's called "Getting To Know You" and it's put out there by Keely over at Mannland5....

Getting to know YOU

Drop by and get to know some neato bloggers... (Yeah, I said "neato"... I'm hip like that!)

The Q's..

1. Thong or Granny Panties?
If I have to choose only one I'll go with Granny Panties... I only floss my teeth... (Oh.no.she.didn't...)

2. If you see a guy with his fly down, do you tell him?
Stranger... no
Husband... yes

3. Spanx or no Spanx?
I've had a couple Spanx moments, but over all I'm a comfort girl, so I avoid them....

4. Do you sleep in your sheets?
As opposed to?... Of course I do... and blankets too if needed...

5. What is your favorite Disney character?
I guess I'd go with Kanga or Owl from Winnie the Pooh

6. Dream vacation spot?
I know I should say Paris or Venice or some place exotic, but I love Walt Disney World...

7. What is your dream job?
I loved owning my own shop... I'd like to do that again someday...

8. Who is your hero and why?
This is tricky... I guess I'd have to go with the Axeman... He is very patient with the girlies and still loves me after all this time and all the crap I tend to put him through... Plus, when I told him my parent's needed us... well, you know that story...

Now it's your turn...

  Thanks for listening,

No, Really... You Shouldn't Have...

Somebody likes me!!

Can I get a Woot Woot!!

How can I be sure you ask?

(Of course you would... always tryin' to burst my bubble...)

Well, my bloggy friend Jackie (from My Perfect Little World) gave me an award...

Yep... you read that right so that's how I know for sure...

Thank you Jackie...
You know I lov ya more then Jelly Beans....
& I love me some Jelly Beans!

(PS... She went private a while back since she had some weird stalker thing happen...
So if you can't pop over to her blog to say "Hi" don't take it personal...)

Anyhow... Without further fanfare...
Here is my new award...

You read that right... I got the "A Blog With Substance" award...
I don't know that I am a blog with substance...
But I am a substantial woman who blogs...
so I'll take it!

Here are the rules...

1. Sum up your blogging philosophy in 5 words.

Ok... I'll try:
Laughter... Struggles... Real... Joy... Connection...

Laughter... Because I love to and I want to pass it on...
Struggles... Because I have them just like everyone else...
Real... Good or bad... I just want to keep it real...
Joy... I find joy in this life I have (again good or bad times)  and I hope you see that...
Connection... I love connecting with you...
When I started this I didn't realise how real the connections would be...
I love you guys... (Can I get an awwww...)

If I had one more it would have been "over-punctuation"... seriously... guys... I... can't... stop...

2. Pass this award on to 5 others:

This is trickier...
I know some of y'all don't bother with these "awards" (you're too cool or have too many followers for such things) and I just know I gonna leave someone off that will be bummed not to be picked... Seriously guys, this feels a bit like Junior High Gym Class...

Here goes...

Chelle is seriously one of the sweetest people on this planet... I'm not just saying that, she really is a bright spot in my life, and we've never met... There have been times when her encouraging words have meant more to me then she will ever know... She has tons of followers and sponsors and all, but still makes time to be kind to a small potatoes blogger like me...

Taylor is definitely too cool to accept my silly award, but her blog makes me laugh out loud daily... She keeps it real, she knows the difference between "Hola" and "Holla"... and I can say with all honesty I believe she will be the next "Superstar Blogger"... Seriously, she is the next PW guys...

Mandi is exceptionally funny... an amazing photographer... and also is way too cool for this award... (Do you see a theme here... I do...) But she keeps it real like no other blogger I know and her home improvement projects inspire me... I'm glad she doesn't list her followers on her side bar or my inferiority complex would sky rocket... (Plus she doesn't nag me about the two camera strap covers I owe her... and as soon as I unpack and hem the ends I'll send those... sorry...)

Lisa seriously inspires me... Every time I read her blog I want to fix something up... She is an amazing bargain hunter and encourages me with how much she is able to do with her bargain finds... Seriously folks, her home looks like the pages of a magazine or Pottery Barn or something and she shops at places like Goodwill... Either she has the best Goodwill in the country or she is remarkably talented... I vote the later...

Hands down, Jenn is the best bloggy friend you can ever have... She doesn't always blog a lot, (although lately she has been out blogging me) She is... Well, to be truthful, words don't describe her encouragement and loyalty... She was probably the first person I didn't actually know who read my blog and commented and I look forward to her comments still... Her encouraging and kind words have at times been like rain in the desert to me, and I'm sure she doesn't even know it... (well... now she might...) Plus she's rockin' some cute bangs these days that made me wish I was much more cool....

Be sure to drop by and say "howdy" to each of these amazing women...
(Say "Hola" to Taylor... she loves it!!)

Thanks for listening,

We went to Damariscotta (Maine... of course) for the day.

My parent's had a medical appointment, but since the Axeman wanted us out of the house so he could finish some projects we decided to make a day of it...

First we went to the Newcastle Publick House for lunch...
(I highly recommend it, if you find yourself in the area.)
Technically it's across the bridge in Newcastle... but you can see Damariscotta from there, so that counts right?

The food was amazing...

I had the enormous (and yummy) "Pub Burger" with cheddar and bacon (of course)...

The food was so good it made us silly...

See...

Even my mom and the hostess got in on it...

Alas... they were harder to catch on film...

After lunch we explored downtown (during their appointment)...

And the waterfront area... right behind the downtown...

The girlies surprised me with a new wallet, and we picked up some Banana Republic jeans for Cate for $12.00 and 6 American Eagle tees for sparky at 4.00 each at Renny's (a local discount chain)...

Later we picked up my parents and headed over to Round-Top Ice Cream for a final treat...
I have heard about Round-Top Ice Cream my whole life, but have never been...
Frankly, I like Dorman's (I talked about it here) better, but it was very good...
I mean, rarely have I had bad homemade ice-cream...

Over-all a fun day for everyone, and the Axeman got tons done... Which makes him very happy!

Thanks for listening,

VBS & Girlie Pics...

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

First of all, thank you for all you advise on my last post. There are a couple suggestions there that are very helpful, and I plan to try them out. I'll let you know how it turns out.

We had VBS last week at the church we've been going to since we got here to Maine. VBS is a program that is dear to my heart so of course I volunteered right away. The girlies also love working with the kiddos so they signed right up too... This year in an effort to save some money we used a VBS curriculum from a couple years back used by a church about 30 minutes from here and they used one that this church used last year. It was a good idea on the surface, but presented some problems when it comes to props and supplies. I helped with the decor and opening and closing programs. Sparky helped lead songs and Cate helped with games... We all had a blast! Here are some pics Sparky took...

The "set"

Marilyn "The Leader" aka "Professor Power"

Me as "Professor Wilma"... afraid of my lost lab mouse...

Marilyn looking for my "lost mouse"

at this point several kids swear they have seen it...
I really miss childhood imagination...

Me as "Prof. Wilma"... I hope some of these kids will eventually stop calling me Wilma...

Cate... 2nd from left... out in the hot sun leading games...

I also have some pictures of Sparky, but they need to be downloaded... I'll post those soon...

Finally, here are some fun pictures of the girlies taken last Sunday... They were waiting for me to emerge from the house and messing around with the camera... when I came out they roped me into snapping a few... The Axeman was waiting in the car... We took about six before he lost patience...
I think they are fun...

I love these girlies...
I am blessed everyday by them...
Sweet... Silly...
That's why I call them the "Girlies"
(PS. These pictures were not edited...  Sunday was that pretty!)

Advice Please...

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

As you know, we moved from Tennessee to Maine last month to live with my parents... They needed our help in order to prevent the state from forcing them into assisted living. For the most part things have gone smoothly... they know they need us here and that things would be bad for them if we moved out. My mother tends to be a controlling person, but for the most part she has been trying really hard.

One area we struggle with is since she can't be controlling in a direct way, she has reverted back to using "passive aggressive guilt trips" to get her way or at least try to. When ever she doesn't want to do something or is confronted in anyway she takes on the tone of a "whipped puppy" and says things like..."No, that's ok... I'll never (insert whatever here) again"... I usually try to ignore her, but that doesn't appear to be working. Let me give you an example.. This morning she once again didn't wake up when her alarm went off... most mornings it goes off at around 7:30, and goes off until one of us go in, turn it off and wakes her up. Today it went off at 6:30 (she wanted to get up earlier..aghhh) and went off for 40 minutes until I gave up trying to sleep through it and went in and turned it off... We have discussed this nearly every morning and she always says she will use a different alarm clock, but every morning we have the same issue... This morning I didn't wake her up... I just let her sleep, so she thought her alarm didn't go off. When she wandered out at 9:30 AM I calmly told her that her alarm went off for over 40 minutes please could she use a different clock... Her response... "Don't worry, I'll never use an alarm clock again." (in that annoying defeated tone) ... What?!?!?.. I just walked away... but I think she is starting to think my walking away and not fighting with her is her winning, so she is doing this more and more... At least seven times in the last two days that I can think of off the top of my head and she is starting to do it with the girls too... (They are starting to avoid her... and I don't blame them.)
Help... I could really use your advice... Do I confront her?... Do I continue to ignore her?... If I confront her, how do I keep it respectful?... I know I need to tell her the issue and let her know how I plan to respond to her manipulations in the future, but... oh, I don't know. All I know is this can't go on, it is escalating and I can see things exploding if they aren't dealt with...

Let me know what you think,

For VBS week...

Sparky is helping the song leader... Cate is helping in games... and I am assisting in the opening and closing program and filling in for the kindergarten leader the rest of the week...

And My Top Two Questions Are....

Saturday, July 10, 2010

...Will we ever be settled?  and...  Am I completely nuts?...

The answer to question #1...
I am starting to think not...

We are currently having new carpet/flooring put down... Some of which we are doing ourselves, some pros are coming in to do. The carpet here was installed in 1979... Yep, you read that right... It was time... Alas, even with us doing some of the work, we can't afford to re-do the whole house at once so I got this hair-brained scheme to patch and paint the sub-floor in the living room, then put down a large LL Bean braided rug I already have... It is a temporary fix, but a much needed one... That being said, when you are doing flooring you have to move every piece of furnatue out of that room... What made me think we could hire out to do carpet in all three bedrooms in two days? Then us do the living room the following day? Have I totally lost it... Am I totally nuts? (Alas... the answer to question #2)

I am also painting several pieces of furniture... Why start another project right now you ask... 'cuz I'm nuts... I thought we'd established that...

Oh yeah and next week is VBS at the church we've been visiting and somehow I got roped into helping with set design... First Sparky wanted to help, and I was just supposed to be driving her to the church to help... but it was one adult, two teens and three pre-teens doing all the work... and said adult turns out to be a very nice woman who has genuine "friend" potential... I couldn't just drop her off with out saying that phrase that always gets me in trouble... "Is there anything I can do to help?"... (again...nuts...) I am having fun doing it... Can you believe they have never even heard of a Cricut?

On a positive note... The Axeman had a job interview today... For a really good job... It went really well... Please pray for the Lord's will in this... A company he used to work for when we lived in Maine several years ago has made it known they would like him back... The downside is they are about an 1 1/2 hour drive from my parent's house... With all the crisis that happen here regularly we would both like him closer then that... Not to mention we are sharing one older model car... so transportation would be a problem... The job he interviewed for today is literally 5 minutes from here... less if he hits the one red light just right... That would be a huge blessing... Oh and they have a company vehicle for him to drive... That would be another huge plus... I'll keep y'all informed...

I think I should sleep now...

Thanks for listening...

What we found...

Thursday, July 8, 2010

We had a good day on the island yesterday... It was hard to both see how shabby the camp has become though. I shouldn't have been surprised with all the deferred maintenance here at the house, but there it is epidemic. The Axeman spent the day living up to his name trying to thin the downed trees and such. We didn't know there would be so many so we didn't bring a chainsaw so all he had was an axe... He was dead tired by the end of the day.

The inside was equally in need of a good cleaning and for the most part it still does... My parents haven't been to the camp in over two years and have let various family and friends of the family use it for weekends etc... Let just say... they don't deserve their (non-existent) security deposits back... There were several people in and out of there in the past two years so it is impossible to say who did what, but there was a definite lack of respect for the camp... Apparently someone (or multiple someones) felt the need for some souvenirs too as a lot of things were missing. (Once again, my family makes me so proud.)

We spent the day going through things and trying to clean up a little bit. We almost missed the last ferry off the island even though we were in line over an hour early... The lesson learned by that... always take medical supplies and meds with us if there is a chance we may not make it home for the night. We talked to the guys at the ferry terminal about the medical issues then put both my parents in the car with me as we had been assured they would be able to get us off island. (There is no hospital or even a pharmacy on the island, so we qualified as a medical emergency.) But the Axeman and Cate were in the other vehicle and it was doubtful they would make it. Fortunately for him the two pickups in front of him were too big for the one spot they had left so they flagged him around and he was literally the last car on the last ferry...

We got home, ordered pizza and literally dropped into bed...

There was a funny story about ice cream and the question about what goes on in the minds of teenagers... I'll share that with you tomorrow...

Just a 30 Minute Ferry Ride Away...

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Tomorrow we are off to one of my favorite places on earth...

Islesboro, Maine...

A tiny island off the coast. Last week I told you about Lincolnville... Well the ferry to Islesboro leaves from there and a short, blissful 30 minutes later you are literally whisked to another world. A world of "Island Life & Island Time" a place where you stop caring what show is on TV that night or any such nonsense...

Oh yeah... also a world shared in the summer by CEOs and celebrities, (John Travolta to name one) but no place is perfect. That being said, Islesboro is close in my book...

My parents own a "camp" there... That is "Maine Speak" for a cabin... I spent a lot of my childhood there, especially summers. We were free to roam... it was as close to blissful as a childhood place can be.

I remember one year we had visitors in late August (actually we had visitors non-stop, but this was one particular time...) who wanted to watch the evening news and my step-dad told them sorry, but the TV broke in July... We kids hadn't noticed. Every night was cocoa & popcorn while we played board or card games (parcheesi or queens usually) the a chapter from whatever book we were reading that summer then off to bed. It was heaven... I still have those same feelings when I visit as an adult, so I am excited to be going tomorrow.

Alas we are not going for happy reasons... My Parent's are selling "The Camp"... (you can peek at the MLS here if you want...) With their needing to go into assisted living soon and the fact that they can't handle upkeep here, let alone on a second home, it was the wise choice.

They offered it to us kids first (to buy) but since none of us could afford it, it is now on the market. It is bittersweet, bitter because it is a big part of my childhood being sold, sweet because it has become just one more burden for my parents... The Camp costs them a lot in taxes and upkeep, but neither of them has been over there in two years... They just can't make it...

We are going over tomorrow to remove some of the more sentimental and personal items...
Sad, but at least I get to spend a day there...

I'm sure I'll have lots to tell you tomorrow...

Thanks for listening,

Q: What do Beds, Pies & Fresh Strawberries Have in Common?

Sunday, July 4, 2010

A: They were all part of my day today.

We had a typical Saturday morning for the most part... Busy... I look forward to the day when I can sleep in again. Sparky and Cate were off to the parade in Thomaston with friends and the Axeman had promised the girlies he would put up their pool this weekend so we hit the ground running. Sparky is also spending the weekend with friends of the family in southern Maine so while they were gone I had to finish the laundry so she could have clean underwear. Why didn't she think of this last night as she was packing you ask... Didn't it occur to her that when she opened her drawer and only found one pair she might need to wash some?... Oh, I'm sure it did, but she probably didn't feel like doing it and decided to make it my problem... This backfired since I was doing laundry when I would otherwise be headed to the ATM for her, so her spending money for the weekend is the $6.00 she came home from the parade with...

After she left we went to Dow Furniture in Waldoboro because my parents desperately needed a new mattress & box spring and I needed a new headboard. We had great success, and even got a jump start on looking at sofas. Our bed is currently in front of the only window in our room (This is the only place it fits...) so our old headboard which is solid just blocks out all air circulation so we needed a more open one. I found one in the scratch & dent room for less the $100 and even though I am not thrilled with the color it is stained, I can always paint it later.

After there we stopped at "Beth's Farm Market" in Warren...

Google Photo

I was still bummed that I hadn't found any strawberries so we gave it a shot... Wow, what a place... I'd never been, it was an experience. We found some strawberries and they serve fresh strawberry shortcake so we each ordered one... it was hands down the biggest and by far the best strawberry shortcake I have ever had.

From there we headed to this little country store in Warren my mom read about in Downeast Magazine... Supposedly they have some of the best pie in New England. It is called "The Lincoln Country Store" but only the name is quaint... It is a small grocery store with two gas pumps out front. They carry the typical fare, but they have these pies that looked so good we got two... "Wild Maine Blueberry" and "Raspberry Delight" and they were right these pies were G-O-O-D...good. The crust was amazing and I know we will make the drive for more. I can't wait to sample other kinds.

When we got home the Axeman had the pool set up and Cate was so excited... It is just one of those $300 Wal-Mart pools, but she loves having that pool... Swimming is her favorite part of summer and to be able to jump in off the deck anytime is such a treat for her. I just hope the water warms up in the cool temperatures here... I don't want hot days, but the thought of swimming in 65 degree water is a bit off-putting...

Well, I'm off to bed...
I hope each of you have a wonderful 4th...

Thanks for listening,

Annie Get Your Gun...

Saturday, July 3, 2010

I was gonna tell you all about Rockport today, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.... First I must vent about my day...

It started like any other day here in this coastal paradise that is Mid-Coast Maine... Cool breezes... Sunny skies... Impossibly blue ocean... So the axeman and I decided to got to our favorite little coffee/book shop here. The drive that normally takes about 7 minutes took 20... There were tons of cars on the road... Ahhh... Tourist season is upon us... When we couldn't find parking within six blocks of the coffee shop we should have taken it as a bad sign and went home... Not to re-emerge until after Labor Day... But alas, the siren call of a good cup of coffee and the local newspaper called, so we forged on. When we got to the coffee shop the line was about 20 people deep, so I left the Axeman in line while I went to get the paper and pay for it under the huge sign that says: "This Register is for Book Store Sales Only"... Apparently the very cranky customer in front of me trying to pay for his coffee there missed it. As the poor girl at the register (near tears) tried to explain that the book store and coffee shop are separate businesses in the same building, only to be interrupted again, I intervened and suggested her get back into the coffee line and stop harassing the poor girl. After dropping the "F-bomb" he slammed his coffee down on the counter spilling it and stormed out of the shop... I had just survived my first encounter with a tourist. If I had known this was setting the tone for the day and not an isolated incident, I might have followed that earlier instinct to hide out... Not naive Rebecca...
We headed across the street to my cousin's bakery and she was mobbed too... But being family has privileges so we helped ourselves to a couple muffins and when things died down a bit and her helper could handle it she joined us for a little break... I was so happy for her... Business was great... She was exhausted, but felt prepared for the holiday weekend... By the end of this weekend every year she is usually in the black for the year... Oh... yeah... Tourist's are good for the local economy... I put the coffee shop incident behind me and bravely went on with my day. After the now 30 minutes it took to drive home, my resolve was wavering, but since the girls needed to be at the church to paint set decorations for VBS by noon I headed right back out...
Now admittedly Mane has some confusing streets and traffic patterns... I grew up here, so I get it, but even the Axeman gets confused who has the "right of way" as it often seems illogical and the signs are at times vague... I was at just such a spot behind a family from Vermont... They had the right of way but were confused and stopped... It happens there a lot, everyone figures it out in a moment... Tell that to the New Yorker behind me laying on his horn... When I finally looked up into my rear view mirror he gave me the finger... Clearly he is enjoying his relaxing weekend away... But soon all was figured out and he sped around a whole line of traffic in the breakdown lane at the next light... Off to take out his "relaxation" on some one else no doubt...
We have been going to this little church that my Aunt & Uncle (& and other family) goes to... It is admittedly on the prettiest piece of land you can imagine... Behind the brick church with the prerequisite white steeple is a beautiful lawn with sweeping, panoramic views of the harbor... Too pretty for words... Or so thought the couple from Massachusetts who nearly plowed Sparky down drive at full speed through the back parking lot with both the passenger and driver snapping away on cameras... Thankfully her looked up just in time and although his over-correction almost caused him to plow into the van of the man there to service the furnace, we all lived...
I left the girlies there and headed over to the grocery store to pick up some last minute supplies for the weekend... Why I didn't shop in advance is clearly and argument for my own insanity... Let just say after all those years in Tennessee I was rusty on the ways of the "tourist"... First of all, the parking lot was so full you'd have thought they'd just announced the end of all food production and distribution... There were literally no spots and you just had to circle in hopes somebody would leave and you'd be close enough to grab their spot... A frustrating exercise in near futility... But alas... I got a spot...after only a few minutes... a prime one near the exit door... Some Vermonter (a different one) in a Prius tried to grab it, but he realised at the last moment that I was driving a much older vehicle and had no intention of stopping...
I got inside to discover that we were indeed experiencing a food shortage... They we bought out of so many items... The produce guy told me there were no fresh strawberries because some woman from New York had bought them out that morning... At the deli a woman in madras shorts was clearly stymied by the "Take a Number" procedure and even though I'd been waiting nearly 15 minutes for my turn she had the nerve to just start ordering... Since I was holding up my number, the girl in the deli told her to please take a number... At that she turned to me and said "You don't mind if I go right?"... WHAT???..
It became clear it was time to head home... So my question is this... Every one of you knows what happens to the deer in "deer season... And the same goes for moose, bear, and even turkey season... So if it's "Tourist Season" why can we shoot them?

Where I am... Rockland Edition

Friday, July 2, 2010

Some of you (ok... one of you) asked me to tell you more about where we moved to. That is a hard and easy question. The area where we are is a series of quaint, small towns. You leave one town and you are in the next one. So I decided to fill you in on each of these towns one at a time.

First Up... Rockland

Technically Rockland is a city... I say technically because with a population of just under 7500 it feels a lot like a small town. They do have a Wal-Mart but it is tiny... It is like a "baby" Wal-Mart... But other then that, two grocery stores, a JC Penny and the big two home improvement stores all the businesses are your typical "mom and pop" operations...

The light house in Rockland is particularly cool... it sits at the end of a mile long granite "breakwater" in the middle of the harbor... A fun way to spend the afternoon is walking with you family out to the lighthouse...

They also have a super cool downtown. It is full of locally owned shops and galleries...

There is also the Farnswoth Museum smack in the center of down town.

That "installation" piece on top of the museum reminds me... Rockland has serious "Good Eats"... Of course there is the seafood... Heck, they have a lobster festival the first weekend of every August and if sea food is your desire I can tell you a dozen places to go... That being said, if you visit Rockland there are two places you must go...

 First, Wasses Hot Dogs...

This may appear to be just any old walk-up hot dog stand, but it is so much more... Even if you don't like hot dogs you must try a Wasses. Locals will wait in line 10 deep, in the rain for one... Yes, they are that good... Oh, and even though you can get other things... chocolate milk is the traditional drink of choice...

Oh, and speaking of lines 10 deep... The next "must stop" location is Dorman's Dairy Dream...

Their homemade ice cream is to die for...

You just have to take my word for now, but if you visit Lunch at Wasses and desert at Dormans is on me!

There is so much more to be said about Rockland, but I guess those will have to wait for another day...

Thanks for listening,
