Spark Notes... #2

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Here it is folks.. Time for Spark Notes... The weekly musings of my 14 (almost 15) year old daughter, Sparky... I hope you enjoy...

I'm a Fan... but I didn't "Drink the Kool-Aid"

I do not understand the obsession every female my age and older has with the twilight saga. I'm not saying I don't like it, in fact really like the books, and have read them several times. It's just not like I'm gonna be building a shrine to it anytime soon either.

Like I said, I've read all the books, I've seen the movies that they've made, and will continue to go see them as long as they keep coming out. I'm excited about the movies too. I just don't understand the girls/women that dress in twilight head-to-toe everyday, quote the movie and books regularly, want to name their kids after the characters, and even have their own name changed. These are fiction people. I know girls who call them selves Christians who have never read the Bible, but have read these books so many times the pages are falling out. I don't understand this, its just a movie. Yeah sure, some of the actors are good looking but they don't act like that in real life. They are “acting” it's just a job for them. They're not perfect, no one is. I know this is obvious, but I'm not so sure that some people realize this.

I'm not blaming the books, movies, or even the author. I do really like them. I just don't feel the need to choose “teams” and wear tee-shirts declaring this. I don't understand how sane people that go off and fantasize about their own Edward or Jacob so much that they drive themselves to near insanity. I hope they realize that they will never or actually will never find a vegetarian vampire boyfriend who will do everything and anything including die to protect them. In fact, if they do they may want to call the police and get one of those “restraining order” things, because this person is not healthy. I definitely see the appeal in Edward though, let's face it he's good looking, charming, smart, and he has that whole bad boy thing going for him. Plus he opens up a whole new realm of possibilities which is basically the dream that every girl has drawn out a million times over in her mind.

We all think we want someone that devoted, a soul mate, someone who only wants us. As a teenage girl, I especially know this feeling, but the fact that so many girls are in love with this fantasy is beyond me. I met this girl the other day that has read these books over 200 times! If she is reading these books so much, when will she ever meet a “real” guy, and will he ever measure up? I am kind of starting to feel bad for the guys that actually exist because almost every girl out there think they know what its like to have the perfect boyfriend and no real guy will ever quite measure up. Well, I wish them the best of luck, and I hope the girls they meet will give them a break. Ladies it's time to keep fiction as fiction and learn to settle for less then “Edward Cullen”. But that is just one girl's opinion.
Goodbye for now

  1. I don't know what the obsession is with Twilight either, but I haven't seen the movies or read any of the books. I don't remember being this obsessed about something fictional when I was your age. But, I do admit being obsessed about the greatest boy band around back then (NKOTB). If you had seen everything I had, you would've definitely thought I was crazy.

    Have a nice weekend!

  2. you, my dear, have a good head on those shoulders. it's like with any fiction: reality just never lives up to the picture we create for ourselves and we end up extremely disappointed! i remember longing for a friend like diana was to anne in anne of green gables :) but that made all my other friendships seem blah and i think i missed out on alot, seeking out that perfect friend! glad you won't fall for that :) it makes you a good friend and a future good spouse!

  3. Love the title to this! LOL!

I think the further I have ever taken an obsession is tape posters from magazines on to my wall and even then it really was to cover my outdated walls.

    Great post! ;-)
