I am fine... Thank you all for your concern...
A few days after my last post the laptop my husband and I share had an oops...
Well, I'll just show you...
Can you see it?
Here, I'll get closer...
Ouch...
I didn't panic though... This computer is only five months old... Not only is it under warranty but we purchased the extended warranty... We packed it up and sent it off with the necessary forms filled out and mailed my happy place computer off to the mid-west...
Alas the warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on... Not only did they not fix it, but if we wanted it back we had to pony up return shipping!
When we got it back we were discouraged further when we took it to a local repair shop and were quoted between $400 & $450 to fix it! It was only $600 new and was currently on sale for $475!!
We thought it was a total loss... For an afternoon that totally bummed me out...
Then it made me angry...
I mean it made me really ANGRY!!!
I don't have an extra $475 lying around any time but definitely not a Christmas time...
So in an anger fueled web search (On Cate's computer) I looked up replacement screens online and found one for only $65 + s&h... Before we hit order Paul and I watched a YouTube video showing how to replace our particular models screen...
It didn't look easy per se...
but it didn't look hard either, so we went for it...
Our new screen arrived yesterday... Paul ended up doing all the work, but he did let me snap one more picture of it all opened up...
Cool huh? I thought so...
The hardest part was keeping track of about a dozen of the tiniest screws ever...
After we (he) dropped the second one we ( I ) smartened up and grabbed a magnet.
The total repair took about 45 minutes... It was pretty strait forward, but delicate work.
That's it... less then $100 and less then an hours work!!
Sorry I disappeared again... Hopefully it will be the last time for awhile!
I missed you guys tons and now that I am back online I will be dropping by to say hello and catch up!
You inspire me that you fixed it by yourself! :) Glad you're back!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're back! I wondered what had happened. We had that happen to a laptop screen and discovered also that a. warranties aren't worth anything, and b. screens are almost as expensive as laptops themselves. Kudos to you for fixing it!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know you could replace the screen! Smart move.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're back!
Wow! You guys are awesome to fix it yourselves. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh... I stand in awe of your Mad Computer Skillz. If duct tape or WD-40 doesn't fix it, I'm pretty much just done.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're back ;D

Why does the repair shop always want to charge so much? If they would just be reasonable they'd make a little money. My dyson vacuum quit a couple weeks ago and the repair man pronounced it junk and $180+ to fix. A little visit to amazon and $40 later I had a new part on the way. Took my husband 30 min. to fix. And it's good as new. So yea to you for saying I can do that!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you guys! That was really resourceful! Not only that, but you kept another computer out of the landfill :-)
ReplyDeleteAmazing! That "no good warranty" trick happened to us on a Nikon camera that our son had. I was rather fueled with anger as well. And they said the exact same things to us after we paid for s&h to have it shipped via UPS! I was livid! So do I ever fill out warranties anymore NOT wasting my time! I like yall's ideas of looking on line for help and parts to fix it ourself! WTG. missed you and good to have you back, How was your Thanksgiving? Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteWay too funny! I had just replaced my $600 laptop, because it had some unidentifiable problem that could not be fixed. I bought an identical lappy for $450, and my screen came with issues and within a couple weeks looked a lot like yours. The whole warranty thing was a HUGE waste. So I took the screen out of my old dead lappy and put it in the new one. I took a piece of cardboard, drew my laptop on it, and taped all the screws on accordingly. It was a snap to put back together. My sister walked in while I was performing surgery with my dad's screw driver set strewn across my bed with my two laptops gutted. lol! She screamed in horror, but to EVERYONE'S surprise, it worked. :)
