Same Ole Rebecca...

Saturday, January 25, 2014

My worst blogging fear has happened... By being the least consistant blogger on the planet I have driven away my dear bloggy friends... I get it... I post and promise to be "back" then promptly disappear again... and again... and again... Plus I have noticed something about myself... If I am not posting, I don't read other people's blogs... It's as if I don't deserve to know their stories if I am not doing my part...

When I do post I blog about heavy, weighty subjects and there is very little trace of the witty, funny Rebecca you all met back when I started this blog as a New Year's resolution back in 2010. Then to top it off, when I do come back I am promoting a business... I know I deserve the silence... The day after day of "No Comments"... I earned them and I will just keep blogging into the void and hopefully someday I will earn readers again! I have once again resolved to be a blogger... I miss it and I miss all the amazing ladies I met through blogging!

Just to prove to you guys that I am the same ole Rebecca I figured I'd share some of my embarrassing moments since joining Mary & Martha with you... (You know, just in case you suddenly thought I became a put together business woman!)

Here they are, my top 10 most embarrassing moments as a Mary & Martha consultant:

10. Spilled red punch down the front of my yellow shirt as first guest arrived and didn't have anything to change into and had to go the entire night with dribbles of red down my shirt

9. Write down the address wrong and show up at the wrong house for gathering.

8. Be so gabby upon arrival at said wrong house and did not figure it out right away until man who opened door asks who you are and when you tell him you are there to do his wife's party only to be informed he is single.

7. Feel so sweaty after setting up for a gathering I sidestep a hug and knock over the host's coat rack

6. I got so lost on the way to a gathering that I was the last to show up and so I did the gathering one item at a time as I unpacked them

5. Trip over welcome mat upon enter hosts home and greet her by landing with a thud on my knees at her feet.

4. "Broke wind" during gathering in the silent but deadly fashion causing the eyes of several guests to water... Never claimed it and the hosts dog took the blame!

3. Get home to find hosts cell phone I accidentally picked up and put in my purse.

2. I call host by wrong name for most of the gathering until someone corrects me... I even went around and asked how everyone knows "Carol" only to find out her name is Heather. (In my defense, Carol was my host the next day.)

AND #1. Stepped on hem of my draw string skirt partially exposing my underwear clad rear to everyone during a gathering!

There you have it folks... Just when I kinda sort of can pretend I have it kinda together... I am still able to compile a list such as this!

Thanks for listening,

Just Another Look at My Thrilling Life...

Friday, July 6, 2012

Remember last week, when we stole away for a couple days to my parents cabin camp on the little island off the coast? Well, It wasn't overly relaxing... You see what I didn't tell you is that we are having a really, really wet summer here in Maine... The three days we were gone was pretty much non-stop rain... It made for a restful time for the most part... As long as you didn't have to go out in it...

Here look, we took Cooper with us, doesn't he look rested and peaceful?
Well, he should be... He has a litter box!

You see the camp doesn't have plumbing... It had an outhouse. Not normally a big deal, I am a big girl and the restful nature of the camp normally far out weighs the "roughing it" aspects of the camp... Not so much this time... This time the path to the outhouse and the area around the outhouse was completely flooded! In fact the path was more of a creek then a path! I don't know about you, but fording a creek in the middle of the night to relieve yourself is not my idea of a relaxing time.

To make matters worse, the guys were less than sympathetic... Making comments about how we would have never survived 100 years ago, and implying that we are weak, whiny women... I think the very fact we willingly go some place with no plumbing implies that we are anything but weak women!

Plus, it wasn't just a little wet, it was muddy too... Like "suck the shoes off your feet" muddy... It was horrible and I told Paul that Allie and I were headed home and would be back to get him and Dakota in three days... Not that he would mind so much, but this hit him in both places where it hurts the most... First the wallet... Each round trip on the ferry is about $30 and this plan would require an extra trip, and probably more importantly, it would hit him in the stomach... As you can imagine, there are challenges to cooking with no running water, but I have kind of perfected our "island food" menu... Me leaving would mean he would be stuck on the island with his 18 year old future son-in-law and a bunch of "ingredients"... Suddenly he was willing to try to fix the problem. His solution was to put several planks across the newly formed creek (stepping stone style) and a piece of plywood across the area in front of the outhouse...

This seemed to work out ok... Until the next morning...

It had RAINED all night... Like poured rain... So the next morning when I awoke, I went into the living room to look out the french doors at "the path." Paul was drinking coffee on the sofa that looks out those doors and told me (actually LIED to me) that he'd been down there and the path was fine... The sun had made a rare appearance so I put on my ever fashionable hot pink crocs (don't judge... they are perfect "camp" shoes), grabbed the giant rainbow umbrella from beside the front door and headed down the path...

I did fine until I reached the part where he put the planks across the running water... They were firmly pressed in yesterday... After all the rain of the night before, not so much... How did I determine this you ask? Well the first step went fine... It was when I put all my weight on the second plank that all you know what broke loose... Both planks decided to slip in the mud, in opposite directions! It went so quick, but the re-telling from Paul who enjoyed the whole show from the comfort of the sofa says I spun around remarkably quick jamming my umbrella into the mud... I remember this part... I optimistically thought the worst was over... Then the traitorous umbrella started to slip!  Now I am doing a split while downhill skiing on two planks of wood in a creek of mud... I manage to throw away the umbrella and latch onto the (flimsy) branch of a passing cedar tree... Paul says at this point he wanted to help me, but was laughing so hard he couldn't stand up... (And I thought the umbrella was a traitor!) All I remember of this moment was that I was vowing not to fall into that mud... It seemed inevitable at that moment, but remember, we didn't have running water for me to clean up with! So, where was I? Oh yeah, on two planks of wood, skiing down a slope of mud clinging for my life on a tiny, pliable cedar twig... In my Christmas theme flannel pants (oh I left that out?) and hot pink crocs... What do I hear in this moment before the inevitable happened? Laughter... Howling laughter from my husband!!!! Seconds later the twig gave out, down I went and yes literally 3/4 of me was covered in mud... Paul did emerge to help at this point... But all was lost, so getting more dirty was no longer my main concern... Please remember that I was on my way to the outhouse... Yes, I still had to drag my pitiful self down to use the potty... Aggggghhh...

By the time I dragged my poor, muddy self back up the hill to where Paul was waiting, I was a sight... I was caked in mud, my pants were so heavy from mud and water I had to hold them up, mud was squishing out the little holes on the sides of my crocs with every step, and I was trying really, really hard not to cry. (After all, he had laughed at the whole thing... I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction...) I pronounced him a bully and squished stomped past him with as much dignity as I could muster...

He must have sensed I wasn't ready to laugh at this yet, so he did what all guys do... He tried to fix it... I told him to stop, unless he could produce a shower I didn't want to hear a word from him!
That was when he said something that (kind-of) redeemed him... He informed me that he read in a pamphlet while waiting for the ferry the day before that the community center health club sells day passes for $10 and they have a shower!

I would pay a lot of money for a picture of the face of that teenage girl as I walk into the health club door, in my Christmas pj's, covered in (now drying) mud from the literal top of my head to my now mostly brown crocs carrying a very muddy, rainbow umbrella in one hand and a reusable grocery store bag of clothing in the other to buy a day pass! (and yes, I took my umbrella into the shower with me, and opened it to clean it... I figured I was covered in the "bad luck" area for that one!)

Anyhow, by day three the rain and mud had gotten to all of us and by the time we headed to the ferry dock to leave we didn't even care that the sun finally made an appearance.
We were all exhausted... We ended up over paying for some cheese burgers and fries at a little snack stand there and camping out in the car to wait for the ferry...

 See what I mean?

Even Cooper was exhausted...
I think I need a vacation to unwind from my restful getaway!

 Thanks for listening,

PS. I do find this funny now, so go ahead and laugh at me, you know you want to!

Nearly Wordless Wed... err... Thursday...

Note to self... Stop procrastinating...
Tomorrow...

Anyhow...

Last time we were on Islesboro we stopped by one of the two stores to pick up lunch...
This is what I discovered in the store's only bathroom...

I don't know what was more alarming...
That the sink is "borken"

Or that the guy fixing my lunch washed his hands with generic baby wipes...

Yep... It's the second one!

Thanks for listening,

A very pretty EPIC FAIL....

Monday, July 25, 2011

Let me start this story with a little background... We have an old vehicle... We had a mini-van while in Tennessee that was less then reliable and were in the market for a new and/or newer car when one was given to us. (Actually two were given to us... but that is a story for a different day.) At the time I was really hoping for a new or close to new car and had a hard time being grateful for this gift, but if we had a car payment debt there would have been no way Paul could have quit his job. Meaning there would have been no way we could have moved here to take care of my parents... I have come to see this a blessing and most of the time I don't even miss the new vehicle that almost was... That being said, we still have an old vehicle... Meaning we are limited in the distance we can travel. (And apparently where we can travel but I am getting ahead of myself...)

Here in Maine nearly every naturally pretty spot has been made a National or State park... Which means that even though our tax dollars support it, we still have to pay to visit it. Last year we paid the $35 for the season pass and used it twice. It only costs $2-$5 per person to get into most of the parks and the ones we were going to cost $3 meaning this pass was a loss of $11 for us. Needless to say we opted not to buy one this year. So being the obvious cheapskates that we are when we heard all the State Parks were free to residents on Father's Day we planned an outing.

To here...

This is right up the road.... Just a few mile from us, but it makes for a nice day trip... Why'd we choose this park when there are 33 others to choose from and this one is only like 5 miles down the road? Because it has a mountain in it... It is right by the ocean, with a mountain that has a car road to the top. Can anyone say "scenic picnic spot?"... Sparky hadn't been up Mt. Battie since she was six and since Cate was working that afternoon it seemed like a good spot to spend an hour or so eating some sandwiches and taking the obligatory photos...

and it would have been...

See how pretty...

There is a cute little stone tower to climb...

and just around the bend you can pay .25 to use one of these things...

I don't know why we ALWAYS do, but they just seem like such retro fun...
and heck... What else does a quarter buy these days...

Unfortunately our older vehicle did not enjoy the drive up the mountain as much as we did...
That may have been the understatement of the year... It overheated on the way up... Paul wasn't worried as we were planning to have lunch up there... Plenty of time for it to cool down, right? That would be wrong... It did cool, a lot, but after an hour and half up there (just about the maximum time looking at the views is fun)  it wouldn't start. We waited about 45 minutes more (wishing we had any reading material at all) and tried again... Nope, nothing. Paul called a friend to come help, (thankfully it was "free" day.) and he came right away (if an hour is right away)... In his (seats two) pick-up... And took Paul with him to get the hose/gasket/engine/muffler/thing-a-ma-jig he needed... (I have no idea what he needed...) Unfortunately it is now after 4 PM, in Maine, on a Sunday... A holiday Sunday... If this part needed is not available at the itty-bitty Walmart we have around here we are pretty much done for...
 We were done for...
But we did not know this before Sparky and I waited up there another long hour... Thankfully my parents bought us AAA for Christmas, because we were going to need a tow truck... Paul and our friend thoughtfully drove all the way back up the mountain to inform us of this need and to get me to call... (Really... You couldn't have handled this Paul... Do you have any idea how long it is going to take to get a tow truck, on a Sunday, a holiday Sunday, in Maine to drive to the top of a mountain???) I now do... Yeppers... About an hour shorter then it takes the second tow truck to get there when the first tow truck on breaks down half way up the mountain... (By the way, the mountain road is now closed... because it is after dark... The park rangers who cannot go home to their families yet until we leave the pitch dark, unlighted mountain road are loving us...) The second tow truck did the trick... And Sparky and I were rescued, saved, freed, liberated from our mountain incarceration driven home at long last just minutes before 9 PM... I don't know what lesson is to be learned by this... (Other then always have reading material/snacks/water bottles in the car.)... I don't think this is a "moral of the story" kinda event... Just an EPIC FAIL!

PS. The part we needed cost $12 and after Paul got it, it took him 20 minutes to fix our car...
Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Thanks for listening,

Happy New School Year...

And we're off...

Today is Sparky's first day of school... It's a half day for new "upperclassmen" and a full day for new freshman... She doesn't need to be there until noon... We have had quite a morning already... Here is a brief look at our day so far...

Sparky: "I don't know what I should wear."

Me: "What about the outfit you told me about three days ago?"

S: "I need a white tank top for it."

M: "Don't you have a new one?"

S: "I got paint on it this weekend painting my bedroom."

M: (not losing it...yet) "Why did you wear your new tank top to paint in?"

S: "I didn't know the paint would bleed through my t-shirt. Will you run to Wal-Mart and get me a clean one?"

M: "No."

S: "I'll pay for it."

M: "You'll have to work something out... You have six other new tank tops, choose one of those."

S: "They are all in colors I need white..."

M: (doing my best Tim Gunn) "Make it work..."

S: "You just want me to look like a  fool don't you?"

M: "Yep, you got me... Yes, Sparky* that was my evil plan..." (*I call her by her real name.. radical... I know..)

S: (rolls eyes... walks away)

VOICE OVER: (in my head) "Ladies and gentleman... start your engines..."

Here it is time again for another Post-It Note Tuesday...
Hosted by  SupahMommy

PS... I know there are typos up there... Sorry... It is more hassle then it's worth to fix those, so I am pretending it says "bed" not "be" and that it is grammatically correct to us an "an" before the letter "d"... join me in my denial, won't ya?

Thanks for listening,
