Hodgepodgeing and Keepin' It Real...

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

I'm joining Joyce again for her weekly Hodgepodge...

1. In an effort to combat obesity, the mayor of NYC has plans to ban the sale of large sugary drinks (anything over 16 oz.), initially in restaurants, movie theatres, and street carts. Corner stores would also be affected if they are defined as food service establishments. Your thoughts?

You see, I am "obese" and I didn't get that way by drinking "sugary drinks"... In fact I spent most of my "obese" years guzzling diet sodas that it turns out have an appetite stimulant... I gave up diet drinks and felt better and dropped some weight, so go figure... I got fat (yes, i prefer that word to obese) by a combination of things... I first packed on weight fast when I spent four months on total bed rest when I got pregnant... You see I have a genetic predisposition to be fat... Both of my parents are (were) and during my later teen years if I stopped exercising for even a few weeks the weight would come on fast... I gained 60 pounds in those four months and I was not eating a ton of junk food or drinking sugary drinks... About a year after I had Katy I dieted, and lost about 45 of the 60 pounds in two years time, but once I stopped dieting I gained it all back plus another 10 pounds for good measure... Why did I stop "dieting" you ask... Yep, back on bed rest with Allison... After I had her I spent the next ten years yo yo dieting my way up the scale... Every new diet that would come out I'd try it and have momentary success but the second I stopped I'd gain it all back plus a little extra for good measure... Then I got seriously sick and was in bed for the better part of a year... And I had to take high dose steroids during most of that time... I seriously packed on the weight... There would be days I'd eat nothing but skinless chicken breasts and melon and the next day I would be up 5 pounds... I couldn't even look in a mirror with out crying... I hated myself... I weighted well over 300 pounds and felt like a total failure... After I got healthy enough to be up and around I did lose 80 pounds of what I'd gained while sick, but the rest has stuck with me... My weight fluctuates but I just do my best not to be on the gaining side of it... I had to learn to look at myself in the mirror without self loathing and that took a long time and I am only just getting there... Do I eat healthy? No... I do try to and sometimes I am closer to it then others, but I admit a lot of the time I just kinda give up and eat what I want... BUT and here is the one that answers the above question... At no point in my ride from a healthy weight to fat (obese) was I a regular consumer of large sugary drinks... I think that obese people have enough of society looking down at us that we do not need a mayor who clearly never fought an extreme weight fight implying we are too stupid to not know what we should or should not eat or drink...

2. Art festival, music festival, food festival...which would you most like to attend?

I am not really a "festival" kind of person... There are lots of them around here and I generally avoid all of them... If I had to pick one, I'd prefer a food one but after that last answer I was kinda afraid to say so...

3. What are you irrational about?

Police, and bees terrify me... I try to rationalize when I am in the presence of either but my heart rate jumps just at the sight of them...

4. Do you feel confident you'll have a comfortable retirement?

No... I don't think retirement will be an option for us for a very long time...

5. What's been your favorite Olympic moment so far?

(Not ever, just in the 2012 Summer games)

Don't be mad, but I haven't watched a single bit of it... I am not really into it, but my husband is kinda anti Olympics... He hates how elitist it is... How athletes who trained for years and lived on ramen noodles compete in event they themselves could not afford a ticket to go see... A number of years ago when we were living in Montana a local girl made it to the Olympics and the whole town held fundraisers so the family could go see her compete... That was when he learned how much it cost to even watch a single event and since then he has no time for it... He doesn't deny that the cities that host it should make money, but maybe if they scaled back on resort like olympic villages and this competition for the best "opening ceremony" maybe it would not cost $150 for a ticket to watch one of the less popular events...

6. What would you label as the messiest room in your house?

My parents bed room and den where they hang out... They are a bit pack ratty by nature and like to have everything they might ever need within arms reach so they not only keep excess stuff but surround themselves with clutter... And since they get cold easy they rarely open a window, so it is also claustrophobic feeling in there... I try to spend as little time as possible in either of those rooms. (Although since I'm keepin' it real after being laid up with shingles for 10 days my whole house is kinda messy right now and the bathroom may need a hazmat team to clean it...)

7. Do you follow your heart or your head?

Both... I am a logical and rational person by nature but also try very hard to follow the Lord's leading... The Lord's ways are not man's ways... Meaning he more often speaks to my heart them my head and his plan often seems irrational and/or illogical... BUT it is always the way we should go, and as the years go by we are getting better and better at trusting and just making those leaps of faith.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I am interviewing for the teaching job tomorrow (I think) and really hope I get it... (If you have no idea what I am talking about read the last paragraph of my last post...)

Thanks for listening,

  1. Good luck with the interview-hope things go your way!

  2. I am deathly afraid of bees! I had an incident when i was a child where a bee flew in my mouth while eating lunch at the beach. Since then i preferred eating indoors. Good luck on the teaching interview! :)

  3. Don't you just hate it when you're not feeling good and things get 'backed up' around you cuz you're not well enough to deal with it and then when you do feel well enough to do things, it takes all you have and then that makes you not feel well again! Sorry...little rant there. Ha.

    Good luck with the interview!

  4. Popped in from the Hodgepodge ~ GL on the interview!

  5. Yup. In the obese category myself and I have soda a few times a year. Don't they know a real "fat" person doesn't need soda to be fat? Let's regulate cupcakes next!

  6. What we really need, as a society, is the government telling us right from wrong. We are stupid enough to keep allowing government to grow, so we must be too stupid to know what's good for us. And, if lawmakers make it inconvenient, that will completely deter us. ?? In Hawaii you can buy hard alcohol at the grocery store, but you can't buy it after 9pm. Do you think keeps people from getting drunk? You should see the line at Safeway at 8:30pm. And what is going to keep people from buying six 16oz drinks? The whole idea is completely short-sighted and offensive to anyone who is a human.
    <3 <3 <3
Ps. I am terrified of bees, too. I've actually never been stung, so I'm afraid I'll have an allergic reaction. lol.

  7. I go up and down with my weight too. Seems like I gain so easily while others...well seem to eat whatever they want and never gain a pound. Hope your interview goes well.

  8. Ugh - I hate it when you are sick and things get backed up and all you can do is sit there and watch! I'm facing surgery next month and, as much as my hubby tries to be supportive by saying "it will be fine if things don't get done, just relax" I KNOW that it will drive me crazy to not be able to get up and clean! Oy... hang in there and good luck on the interview!!

  9. I empathize with you on the weight. No one in America except a few are uneducated about nutrition in this country or at least the basics of good food choices. People use food for many reasons besides hunger. So the questions of what to eat or drink and how much and with whom i believe are often heart questions. Govt cant mandate our emotions so food and drink bans are ludicrous and illogical. I think we are on the same page. Hope your interview turns into the job u want. I love teaching.

  10. I think the real question has nothing to do with whether large sodas make people fat, but whether the constitution gives the government the authority to legislate something like that.

    It doesn't.

And if we allow them to make laws like that, even when we think those laws are "good", we're giving away our freedom. This mayor also wants to ban hospitals from providing formula to new moms. Again, I'm in favor of encouraging moms to breastfeed, BUT it's nothing the government should have their hands in! We are going down a very dangerous path.

I do sympathize with you regarding weight, though. Fighting that battle myself. Interestingly, have you noticed that God says nothing about obesity in His word? Gluttony, yes. Laziness, yes. (Speaking to myself, here, not criticizing you!)

THAT is that battle I fight. I am fat. I am probably going to remain fat. I do not need to worship at the altar of Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers. But I'm to be a good steward of this body he gave me. I fight gluttony and laziness, not weight. I do not expect to win, but i know Who will. *sigh*

And now I can get my mind back where it needs to be... acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God.

And, oh, sister, I am with you about the bees. The bees!!!
